Writing samples
The best way to show my online work is to direct you to it via a list of links with explanation. It is helpful to know that SEG follows the distributed content model — the business owners of each part of the Web site take responsibility for alerting the Web Content department of the need for updates and provide the essential information and follow-up review of the material online.
In addition, marketing e-mails are initiated by the business owners through a project request system and the Web Content department helps with the technical expertise and editing, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the end product.
The SEG home page is http://www.seg.org. On it, you’ll find the Feature Focus box, which is a Flash piece driven by a form updated within Documentum WebPublisher. The department I led prepared and uploaded the images, wrote the headlines and promo text, and edited and posted the full articles and their images.
One of the e-mail products of which we were the business owner is the SEG Extra e-mail newsletter. I got our department started with a SPAM policy, set us up with an e-mail vendor, led the redesign of the newsletter, and came up with the process by which the other departments would send their notices for inclusion. I also developed the editorial process for the newsletter and taught it to my team, which trades off the duty from month to month.
I also developed the concept for the SEG news page, which aggregates news and information posted throughout the site. We had a rotating placement system whereby the newest items (and those considered most newsworthy by the membership) would start at the top in the featured spot, and move through the thumbnails until they were categorized in the text links by news type.
Introductory article after the site redesign, “Getting started with your new SEG Online,” which had a purpose of showing members how to reset their passwords and usernames for use with the new, more secure system.
State of the Net columns written for SEG’s membership magazine, The Leading Edge: These columns had a dual purpose, which was to inform members about new features on the Web site and to show them how online productivity tools can make their work easier.
Finally, I have a personal Web site, Lessons from a Second Life, in which I write about things you can learn in the virtual world, Second Life, where I spend a lot of my free time.
